Current Events

  • If you or people in your area want to meet and discuss current/future topics related to the city, reach out to me to set up a time to visit. (email, phone call, or in person)
  • As you're driving on the river road by Stephens' park, you'll notice construction on the south side of the road. That's the new central water system treatment facility in progress.
  • Many of you are familiar with the phrase "rural look and feel" or "rural character." Dayton residents have said this is important to them and I agree. It's even in our mission statement. We've had a couple work sessions on the topic and I believe it'll result in a list of ideas we will be prioritizing for the future. If you have ideas, please let me know.

Item E (City Branding Discussion)

In June of 2028, the city approved the current branding. Many of you know it as the toothpaste drawing. HERE is an example. When I spoke to one of the prominent members of the committee that came up with it, her response was... yes it's ugly but it's what you get when the consultant you hire drives you to an answer you may not like.

If you look at cities around us you'll see their branding reflects something about their city. Believe it or not (and this was news to me) our toothpaste extrusion was supposed to reflect 2 rivers, except our 2 rivers are roughly perpendicular, not parallel.

I personally liked our previous branding and wanted the council to look at that decision again so we weren't forever known as the Colgate city. Unfortunately staff put together an argument against it implying we'd need to redo all the original effort including sign design, which was utter nonsense, but the rest of the council seemed to buy into. The topic was closed when the other 4 decided they wanted to stick with Colgate view.

Item G (Roads)

A couple years back the council set up a pavement management plan and set aside a yearly pavement budget to pay for it. This way all of Dayton’s roads get scheduled maintenance rather than what we had been doing years ago, which was to panic and figure out how to pay for maintenance, or worse yet, skip the maintenance and pay more later. This plan has resulted in major road projects roughly every 2 years. By lumping roads together every couple of years, we get a better price.

Typically, this maintenance is called a mill and overlay which grinds down much of the road and put a layer of asphalt over it. This is typically done when the surface indicates it’s worn out (or close) and the base under the pavement is still sound. This passed 5-0.

This item was to approve going out for bids on the following roads:

  • Holly Lane (between Hwy 81 and I-94)
  • Vinewood (between North and South Diamond Lake roads)
  • Pineview (between the River road and South Diamond Lake)
  • Pineview Court (off of Pineview Lane)
  • Balsam Lane (between the River road and South Diamond Lake)
  • The 137th and Evergreen Lane (north of South Diamond Lake)
  • Hemlock – 134th – Balsam – 134 ½ and all of 133rd to the south of that.

As always, contact me with your questions or concerns!
