Current Events
- As you might be aware, I am rerunning for mayor. If you or people in your area want to meet and discuss current/future topics related to the city, reach out to me to set up a time for me to visit with you. (email, phone call, or in person)
- The new water treatment facility is UP AND RUNNING! If you're on the north central water system you should no longer see discolored, sulfur smelling water. Though... if you're not using a water softener, you'll still want to look into getting one.
- Many of you are familiar with the phrase "rural look and feel" or "rural character." Dayton residents have said this is important to them and I agree. It's even in our mission statement. We've had a couple work sessions on the topic and I believe it'll result in a list of ideas we will be prioritizing for the future. If you have ideas, please let me know.
Item K (NW Water Tower)
Since the NW (Old Village) was put in, the city has known the water system didn’t have capacity to fight fires. While we added a backup pump a couple years ago, the pumps can never keep up with the amount of water a fire engine can pump out. That’s where storage comes in. There is only about 1000 gallons of storage in the pump house. A water tower has been on the long-term plan for years but there was never enough funding to justify it. Last year the city of Dayton received a grant from the state which will cover the entire cost ($3M). This item was to go over some of the engineering that’s being looked at for constructing the 250,000 gallon tower. At this time the plans are to put it on the north-east end of the ball field but a few of us had concerns about it being that close to the church. Staff agreed to look at other options.
Item M (Resident Survey Results)
This was the 2nd time (2 years ago) we’ve had a resident survey done. There are a lot of topics covered and if you are at all curious, I would encourage you to watch the video as the company that did it covers the topics pretty well. If you want the written results, they’re in the agenda. Some of the areas include a fairly high resident satisfaction with the city, a continuing concern about taxes needing to continue coming down, growth needing to continue to be reduced, and support to maintain as much rural feel as possible.
Item N (Assisted Living)
This was a variance and site plan review for a proposed assisted living facility behind Raintree Plaza. The original plan was to have a 3-story facility, which was not well received by everyone on the council due to the proximity with the residential development to the west. One of the stipulations we did put in was an 8-foot opaque fence to block any headlights from the drive. The variance was approved 4-1.
Item O (Accessory Building)
This was to adjust the accessory building ordinance to allow traditional shipping containers on properties greater than 2 acres. While 2 of us (me included) were ok with it, 2 were totally against it, and the 5th member decided to make up his own recipe on the spot.... so it died without a second.
Item P (EAW)
This was to approve an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) for Curbside Waste in the industrial area on 118th. While the city isn’t bound to the language in it (it referred to a few services we likely wouldn’t allow), those services were stricken from the worksheet regardless. It was approved 5-0.
Item Q (Letter of Support)
This was to agree to a letter of support for the 2026 Regional Solicitation funding. This funding would be utilized to construct a bikeway along CSAH 12 (Dayton River Road) from the East Boundary to N Diamond Lake Rd. It passed 5-0.
